Friday Firefalling: Beta Weekend

Red 5’s whitewater development cycle appears to be calming at last. Since I first stepped into the beta last April, Firefall has undergone so many fundamental overhauls, redesigns and reimaginings that I’ve scarcely been able to keep up. And while it’s heartening to see the studio channelling feedback so proactively, it could well be a case of reshaping a square peg for a round hole.

Granted it’s been a while since I experienced this particular post-apocalyptic future first hand, but I must confess that my wave of initial excitement was quickly dispersed under the weight of repetitive gameplay and over-familiar MMO tropes. “Kill twenty of these” and “collect ten of those” are tired to the point of anaesthesia, regardless of how well you dress up the combat.

That’s not to say it’s a bad game, it certainly carries its fair share of brightly-coloured charm, but as third-person class based shooty-shooty goes, virtually every aspect has been covered before. Global Agenda, Borderlands, Team Fortress, and recently Warframe all cover similar ground, leaving me pondering quite where Firefall’s niche lies.

Anyway, if you are in the market for a free-to-play MMOey thing, and none of those really floated your boat, then why not give this weekend’s beta event a punt.

Starting at 10:00am PDT on January 25th and continuing through 11:59pm PDT on January 27th 2013, we will be unlocking the servers and allowing anybody who registers for Firefall access to the beta. This means that anyone who has yet to experience the war torn Earth will now have the chance to defend the Earth against the mysterious Chosen, explore the land of New Eden, and face off against their fellow players in fast-paced PvP.

Perhaps given its slick execution, an audience can be absorbed from its peers, but having invested heavily in any of those would significantly dampen my willingness to adopt something so similar. Or maybe I’m just overly grumpy today.

I really enjoyed the Firefall fest thing they did, I don’t quite know why but I spent hours of my life watching people play Firefall (Very badly generally)

Admittedly, winning some prizes helped – The game itself looks like it has a lot of potential but last time I popped on the content was very limited, basically you Thump, Thump some more and then Thump again! Maybe with this beta weekend it’s time for me to gird my loins and delve back into it’s world to see what’s changed and if there is more to do now!
